The Role: 

General Assembly is looking for a Social Impact Support Intern to provide referrals, case management, and brief counseling to students in our Career Impact Bond program. General Assembly students are highly-motivated career changers who are participating in our 12-week software engineering and user experience design immersives in order to build new skills and pursue new professional opportunities. For students navigating personal and family responsibilities outside of the classroom, our Social Impact team plays a vital role in providing the resources and support to ensure they can be successful in their learning. 

As an intern with the Social Impact Program Services team, you will serve as a point of contact for student supportive services using existing department triage and escalation channels.  You will be assigned a caseload of students, working diligently to partner with students to identify critical resources to ensure student success both inside and outside of the classroom. This position reports to the Social Impact Program Services Lead, and will be based remotely.  Preference for candidates who reside in the following geographic regions: Midwest or Southern regions (Central Standard Time)

Population Served: The Social Impact Team serves adult learners who may have faced barriers to other forms of financing options within General Assembly. These students have faced barriers to employment such as justice system involved, recipients of public assistance, or individuals in valid immigration status. 

Compensation: $12-15 an hour

Anticipated Tasks:

Student Support

  • Conduct initial student orientation meetings
  • Complete and review intake assessments
  • Connect with students at key points during the program timeline to discuss current progress, challenges, next steps, job offers, etc.
  • Conduct one- on- one student support sessions as needed (in person, phone, email, slack) 
  • Identify, collaborate, and work diligently to report and resolve all urgent student matters
  • Answer student emails- monitoring Social Impact student inbox
  • Complete Emergency Financial Fund Requests, initial review of application and collecting all supporting documentation as required

Student Resources & Referrals 

  • Provide appropriate and timely referrals to students (external resources and referrals to local community agencies, nonprofits and available low/no cost benefits)  
  • Distribute relevant student resources to support overall student experience
  • Continually identify timely resources both locally and nationally to support student population 

Program Support 

  • Enthusiastically support students, staff, and partners across all communication channels (phone/email/Slack etc)
  • Co-facilitate monthly student workshop sessions
  • Demonstrate familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures across Social Impact Student Services
  • Distribute student surveys (mid point and final) to assigned caseload
  • Employment Data- follow up and collect data on Life after GA for assigned caseload

Experience Requirements:

  • 1 year of experience providing supportive services to student populations, preferably underserved/underrepresented communities and/or justice involved backgrounds
  • Knowledge of public benefit systems
  • Preferred experience working in workforce development, higher education/community college, student service programming, and/or non profit settings 
  • Familiar with student data entry and database management
  • Able to provide individual one on one support, conducting individual student meetings 
  • Ability to think proactively, developing customized student supports to ensure academic success
